Abstract

Smart phones are widely used in various applications because of the recent developments in mobile computing and wireless communication technologies. For senior care, location-based fall detection and alarm system are necessary. This study applies a smart phone as the location-based platform and applies accelerometers to detect the fall down in the aged. Based on the three axis accelerometer, the state of fall down can be determined. Moreover, to make sure the fall detection system completely detection, we used the Kinect to assist the smartphone fall detection system. Kinect was used to detect the fall down in the room. With the depth data collection, this study extracts the skeletal joints from color stream and depth stream for fall detection. Fixed and location-based sensors can be combined for obtaining the sufficient information. The index from the smart phone was used to analyze and detect the motion of fall Kinect sensor provided the skeleton model to recognize the fall down and also records the images. These images which record while falling motion happened can be transmitted to the Web Server. The user can monitor the fall down by the Web Server. Based on the location of fall detection, the proposed server can demonstrate the information in the smart phone and sent to relatives and elderly care unit.
