Cyclist the dreamer, a LBS initiative of green transportation in Taiwan

Abstract


As the major official transportation/tourism research institute in Taiwan, Institute of Transportation(IOT)is assigned by Ministry of Transportation and Communications(MOTC) to do deep research in bicycle transportation. As we know, bicycle transportation is one of very important green transportation mode and, increasingly, cycling has been being not only the purpose of commuting, but also conducting a blooming tourism, cycling industry development and deep culture identity. To fulfill a comprehensive cycling environment, IOT decided to build up a bicycle route named as Cycling Route No.1 which is around whole Taiwan island with well-designed signs and markings. In addition to the route, signs and markings, sightseeing points, supplies are also included.

To provide a great user experience to the cyclists, IOT has announced the website “Cyclist the dreamer”, which contains all necessary cycling information and 360 degree panoramic photos at intersections and important points of interests as well as videos along the Cycling Route No.1  so that cyclists can understand and plan their trip in advance. Besides the website, IOT also develops APP version of “Cyclist the dreamer”, real-time trajectory uploading and sharing, route and supplies information as well as the real-time road congestions and blocking up are provided. This APP also support SOS function which helps cyclists to transmit his/her current position to the pre-defined or specified user to request assistance just in case.
